Here is a 4th generation dry cleaners guide for cleaning a hat and removing dirt, makeup and sweat stains:
1) Pretreat the entire hat with water and dish soap
2) Work in washing or baking soda into the dirt stain to break up the metallic bonds that attached it to the fabric
3) Hit the make up stain with your favorite all purpose stain remover
4) Hand wash in a sink or bucket and let air dry (don't tumble dry a hat)
5) If stains remain, treat with HP and air dry inside or soak in hot water and powdered oxygen bleach and then rinse and air dry
6) Repeat step 5 if the stains remain
