Depending on whom you ask, ecumenism is either central to the Gospel or heresy. It's divisive, to put it lightly. However, I'm convinced much of this comes down to different understandings of what ecumenism actually is.
In this video, I lay out four principles to guide faithful ecumenism:
1. Ecumenism doesn't ignore doctrinal distinctiveness but highlights it
2. Ecumenism articulates doctrine, it doesn't develop it.
3. Ecumenism is bi-directional, proceeding top-down and bottom-up
4. Ecumenism is born of charity and seeks unity
5. Ecumenism is meaningful even outside institutional unification
