Peruvian President Dina Boluarte, who has been facing allegations of not disclosing her collection of luxury watches, has said that the items were lent to her by a friend and that she has already returned them. Boluarte called the investigation a "lie" and a "smoke screen”. On April 5, the president faced questioning by prosecutors for nearly five hours over how she obtained several Rolex watches that seemed at odds with her public salary. Boluarte said she wore the luxury watches in the hope that they would reflect well on the country and admitted that it was an “error to accept those watches as a loan”. This week, she also escaped the start of impeachment proceedings after Congress rejected two motions put forward against her over the "Rolex scandal". Last week, the police raided her house in search of the luxury watches.
