Jigeen Ñi – or The Women, as they’re known in English -is a unique ensemble in Senegal: all band members are women.
Their work is full of rhythms from a variety of ethnic backgrounds, weaving styles such as Afro, blues, reggae, hip hop, jazz, mbalakh, salsa, and zouk.
Jigeen Ñi has had to fight hard to make space for themselves in a cultural environment dominated by men.
Now, they want to pave the way for other Senegalese women in the music industry.
