Who was Ferdinand Berthier?
Ferdinand Berthier was a deaf educator, intellectual and political organiser in nineteenth-century France, and is one of the earliest champions of deaf identity and culture. He was one of the first advocates for Deaf culture in a time when those who had hearing differences were outcast by society.
Berthier was born in Saône-et-Loire, France on this day in 1803.
