The march through the Old City was due to begin just before dusk on Wednesday but from mid-morning, hundreds of young Israeli men — most of them teenagers — streamed through limestone alleyways wearing white shirts and brandishing Israeli flags.
Eight months after the October 7 terrorist attack, as Israel’s war in Gaza rages on, tensions were heightened at this year’s Jerusalem Day flag march.
The event, where thousands of Israeli nationalists march into the Muslim quarter of Old City, marks the annexation of east of Jerusalem by Israel in the 1967 war. But for Palestinians, it is seen as a provocation; a show of ownership and force.
