England won the toss and elected to bowl first at the start of the 1st test match at Hagley Oval. New Zealand batted for 83 overs and put up a strong total of 319 runs but lost 8 wickets in the process. Williamson was the top scorer with a superb 93-run knock. Day 1 ended with Glenn Phillips and Tim Southee on the crease.
