Russian President Vladimir Putin has appointed General Valery Gerasimov as the new commander of his forces for the "Ukraine special operation." Gerasimov, who has been serving as the Chief of General Staff of Russia’s armed forces since 2012, is replacing General Sergey Surovikin. Gerasimov’s appointment comes as Russia is trying to turn the tide of the war. Moscow says the decision is linked to the expansion of the scope of the tasks at hand. Remember, General Gerasimov is considered one of Ukraine's biggest "enemies." According to a New York Times report, Kyiv even allegedly tried to kill Gerasimov in April 2022 but was dissuaded by the U.S., fearing direct conflict with Moscow.
