South Koreans have been warned to take cover after North Korea sent hundreds of hot-air balloons carrying bags of rubbish and excrement over the border between the two rivals.
According to the South’s joint chiefs of staff (JCS), about 200 balloons have drifted across the land border since Tuesday night — the largest number ever — and more are expected.
Photos on social media taken by people living close to the border show bags suspended beneath the balloons containing plastic bottles, used batteries, old shoes and faeces. It is not clear whether they were human or animal.
