By-pass is used if the unit is leaking, when the unit needs to be serviced or to determine if a problem is a water source issue or the water treatment equipment. When in by-pass the water is not running through the water treatment equipment. This will depressurize the system (in the event of a leak or service) until the system can be repaired. If you are testing to see if the water treatment equipment is causing issues (like low water pressure) in the house, place the system in by-pass. If the issues are still present, then the issue are from the water source (such as a private well or a clogged pre-filter)
