The Game Awards just announced the six nominees for Game of the Year. The most controversial pick is Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree. My personal favorite game to get nominated is Astro Bot. It hasn’t sold as well as I think it deserves, probably because of its PS5 exclusivity, but it’s one of the best 3D platformers of all time. Another PS5 exclusive, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, was also nominated. Personally, I found this game to be pretty bloated. But the core gameplay, story, and surprisingly addictive card game, Queen’s Blood, make it a worthwhile nominee. Metaphor: Refantazio, from the creators of Persona, is a strong contender. It offers a fantasy twist on the studio’s past games, and it’s been widely embraced by fans of JRPGs. The one indie game to get nominated was Balatro. What’s crazy is that this game was made by a single person, yet it’s good enough to have a chance at winning. Black Myth Wukong may not have been the highest rated game this year, but it stands out for its cultural impact. People are still playing this one worldwide.
