April 3, 1860, the Hannibal & St Joseph Railroad was running two hours late - bringing the mail for inclusion in the inaugural ride of the Pony Express, bound for San Francisco. At 7:15 PM, Johnny Fry left the Pike's Peak Stables riding his horse Sylph, amid the cheers of the spectators. Fry carried 49 pieces of mail, five private telegrams, and several newspapers in the mochila.
