A lot of dog owners allow their dogs to “sometimes” chase wildlife (in certain “safe” situations) … and it’s a big problem! If you want your dog to be controlled and responsive around animals, I recommend you NEVER let them chase. In fact - I would say that more than half of the students that come to me with impulse control problems of some sort do have dogs that have been allowed to chase wildlife in some capacity … If you want your dog to be able to ignore other animals, keep the training black and white! It is MUCH easier to teach a dog that chasing is just never an option … than to start attaching conditions to it. Plus, think about the poor wildlife … they don’t need to be chased by your dog. They deserve our kindness and empathy, too! For that reason I am also absolutely against using premack principle in this kind of training (I would never teach a dog: first you listen, then you are allowed to chase). Do YOU make chasing completely off-limits?
