Out in the apiary checking bees we discovered a lid had blown off a colony during snow storm. We use screen inner covers so the snow had accumulated on top and the heat from bee cluster had melted a snow cavity just above the cluster and they were using the snow mound as a make shift covering. Wow bees are so amazing. It must have been those Appalachian mutt genetics from @NaturesImageFarmGregBurns doing their best to survive in extreme conditions. I requeened that colony this past fall with one of Greg’s queens. Let’s hope they survive until spring so I can keep those genetics.
