We are contributing to a research project on the Japanese Mantis Shrimp (Oratosquilla oratoria), being undertaken by Hayley Nessia at the University of Auckland supervised by Dr Ian Tuck and Dr Richard Taylor. Hayley is studying the impact and biology of the mantis shrimp which were first found in the Kaipara Harbour in 2010.
Hayley managed to capture this amazing footage of a female mantis shrimp breaking open a wedge-shell clam. Mantis shrimp have specialized appendages which allow them to strike objects at a speed of 83km/h in order to stun, kill or break open food sources.
