The Bamboo Cocktail is a stand out and not just because it utilizes sherry, but also because it was one of the few true classics created outside the US. Although there were many bars operating in Japan in the 1800s there aren't many classic cocktails which claim a Japanese origin. This cocktails was created by Louis Eppinger a German bartender plying his trade at the Grand Hotel in Yokohama around 1850. The hotel was owned by a group of American Military men who were stationed on Yokohama and were hoping to bring a bit of home to the island. Although German, Eppinger had worked in San Francisco bars around the same time that Jerry Thomas was emerging as a behind the stick celebrity.
