Thousands of protesters in Bangladesh's capital, Dhaka, have taken out their anger at the exiled former prime minister Sheikh Hasina by destroying a family home that symbolised the country’s independence but they now regard as a symbol of her authoritarianism. The house had been home to Hasina’s late father and independence leader, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

The demonstrations were sparked by news that Hasina was scheduled to give an online speech to supporters from her exile in neighbouring India, where she fled last year during a deadly student-led uprising against her 15-year rule. During the speech, she called on her supporters to stand against the interim government
