On a recent trip to southern California, I made sure to seek out the California Fan Palm (Washingtonia filifera), after seeing a really cool Instagram post about the plant. It’s the only native palm to the western US, and one of the tallest palm species in the Americas. These palms can be found in small groups in desert oases - places where water reaches the surface, sometimes because of geological faults. It was fun to hike through dry, relatively bare landscapes to finally reach one of these oases, full of water-loving plants and other interesting life. It was also cool to see how widespread this species was used in landscaping - I saw many of them planted throughout Palm Springs and the surrounding cities. LinkTree -
