Have you heard the story of Alonzo Herndon? Alonzo Herndon was born enslaved in Walton County, Georgia, in 1858, and grew up on a farm in Social Circle. In 1878, he left Social Circle on foot with $11 in savings and about a year of schooling. He took a job as a barber and eventually opened his first barbershop in Jonesboro. He then moved to Atlanta in 1883 and expanded his barbering business. By 1904, Herndon owned three shops in Atlanta. Following the racial practices of the era, the Black barbers served an exclusively white clientele, which included the city’s leading lawyers, politicians, and businessmen. As his earnings grew, Herndon invested in real estate, acquiring more than 100 houses, a large commercial block on Atlanta’s Auburn Avenue, and a large estate in Florida. He also purchased a failing mutual aid association in 1905, which went on to become the Atlanta Life Insurance Company, a massively successful business. Herndon was generous with his money, donating to the local YMCA, orphanages, Atlanta University, and churches. At the time of his death in 1927, he was Atlanta’s wealthiest Black citizen and owned more property than any other African American.
