King County government agencies have been told to brace for potential cuts due to a projected $150 million budget shortfall for the 2026-2027 biennium budget.
While the budget planning process is still in the early stages, King County Prosecuting Attorney Leesa Manion says her office may lose $15.5 million in funding.
"That $15.5 million is the equivalent of the salary and benefit costs of 90 deputy prosecuting attorneys,” Manion told KOMO News in an interview on Thursday. "This is a serious number - we already are short staffed. I have homicide prosecutors who have 30 cases sitting on their desk. I have deputy prosecuting attorneys that have 60 vehicular homicide and vehicular assault cases."
In an email to Manion last week, King County Budget Director Dwight Dively said a state law limiting property tax increases has led to the budget crisis.
"The General Fund has a projected 2026-2027 deficit of $150 million because of the state’s failure to provide adequate revenue authority for counties," Dively said. "While we are hoping for action in this legislative session and/or a potential ballot measure, we cannot be sure of either. Thus, we need to start identifying budget reductions now."
