In order to change 5/9 to decimal form we need to divide 5 by 9. We know that since 5 is smaller than 9 we are going to end up with a number less than 1. We can divide 5/9 with a calculator or do it longhand. In this video I did the division longhand (but checked my answer with a calculator). When we divide 5 by 9, we get 0.555 (with the 5 repeating). So: 5/9 = 0.555 (with the 5 repeating) 0.555 (with the 5 repeating) is less than 1 so that is a good way to check if our answer is reasonable. You could also multiply your answer by the denominator and you should get the numerator. In this case 0.555 (with the 5 repeating) x 9 = 5. Note that 5/9 and 0.55555555555556 represent the same quantity, they are just written in different formats. 5/9 is a fraction and 0.55555555555556 is in decimal form.
