Jan. 22 marks a dark anniversary in Pennsylvania history. At a live news conference on that date in 1987, Pennsylvania State Treasurer Budd Dwyer pulled a .357 caliber revolver out of an envelope, said his final words, and killed himself in front of reporters, photographers and thousands of people watching television. Dwyer had been convicted of bribery and faced a maximum of 55 years behind bars. Before his death, he read a statement, maintaining his innocence and criticizing the media, the federal attorney who prosecuted him and the judge set to sentence him. WGAL reporter Gene Schenck, a US Army special forces veteran, was in the room when the shocking event happened. That evening, on WGAL, he shared his thoughts about what he had just witnessed.
