A motorcyclist with a passenger was riding down Santiago Canyon Road when they struck a crossing deer, and crashed.
The deer ran off from the scene.
Seeing the crash, a driver in a red compact car going westbound on the road moved to make a U-turn to try and render aid, a CHP sergeant said.
As the driver was making the turn, he was struck by an SUV going eastbound.
The force pushed the red car down a ditch and into a tree, killing the driver.
The driver of the SUV was not injured, and the motorcyclist from the original crash was taken to the hospital for minor injuries.
CHP is investigating both as two separate crashes, and had the motorcycle’s passenger, who wasn’t injured, take the bike away from the scene.
