President Trump’s promise to build a wall between the United States and Mexico has defined his political career, but a promise made does not guarantee a promise fulfilled. The US-Mexico border is a huge area to secure, requiring many different construction techniques. Sometimes, rough handling has led to drastic environmental damage. A troubled legal environment and lack of a competitive bidding process have led to many cost overruns that make his border wall the most expensive of its kind in the world. Even then, people can and have gotten around it, except for the most vulnerable ones who didn’t. Their stories raise humanitarian concerns to pile on everything else.
