Modern-day Spinosaurus (of a sort :-))
We absolutely adored this Hydrosaurus pustulatus, aka Philippine Sailfin Lizard, exhibit at the Dallas Zoo. This female swam to a log to scamper up alongside her mate. Adorable!
These gorgeous #lizards reach over 4ā long (lots of beautiful tail!) and 5 lbs. The male sail height can exceed 3ā and reminds me of #Spinosaurus.
Notice how she swims, propelled by webbed feet and lateral tail movements. I used slow-mo to better show the classic side-to-side reptile motion I see daily in the deserts of Arizona.
These #lizards are quite aquatic and live on most islands in the Philippines. As they love freshwater it makes me wonder if they rafted rather than swam to each island?
Babies can āwalk on water,ā their webbed feet scampering Fred Flintstone style to keep them from sinking. Tis an amazing sight to behold and a neat trick to escape predation.
What comprises the sail? Caudal vertebral neural spines? I ask because the male seems to be able to raise and lower them, something a bony neural spine likely wouldnāt do without amazing attachment work. Anyone have a pic of a male #Hydrosaurus tail skeleton? I have touched #basilisk skeletons but they are in a different family and could be constructed differently.
Speaking of sails, if they are used for temperature regulation or, somehow, as a swimming benefit wouldnāt we expect to see them in both sexes? Being only on the male makes me think they are used primarily for display. I suppose perhaps the maleās larger body size could benefit from additional cooling.
If for swimming, is it of value because it increases propulsive area, letting it move more water and thus go faster? I am no hydrodynamicist and canāt authoritatively comment, but thatās my best ācommon senseā thought. How do the zygapophyses articulate? I suspect lateral tail moving specializations show up on the skeleton. What does the putative Spinosaurus tail base look like? I am getting a better sense of why so many Spino papers dive (heh) into engineering nowadays!
The Dallas Zoo was quite a delight! The reptile house alone consumed hours of our time. They have #tuatara!!!
