I struggle a lot with my health, and to cope with the constant joint pain I turned to biscuits and sweets for comfort. Eventually, my health got so bad I had to stop working. I felt stuck at home, I was less active and my weight really began to rocket. I had no energy and mentally I was in a very bad place.
My mum had been a Slimming World member before, and in January 2018, we joined our local group together. When I was asked what my dream weight would be, I thought that if I worked hard, I might lose 3 or 4st – I couldn’t see myself being able to lose much more. A few weeks later, I found out the weigh lady in our Slimming World group had lost 10st herself. That moment was magic – it was the first time I remember thinking ‘that could be me’.
As a real foodie, I loved the Slimming World plan, Food Optimising. It felt like something I could stick with because I can make my own choices around food and still be creative in the kitchen. After I’d lost some weight, I got diagnosed with Ehlers-Danlos Syndromes (EDS) – a group of rare conditions that affect connective tissue, and something that would’ve been difficult to diagnose if I hadn’t started my weight loss journey.
I’d always felt like I couldn’t do exercise, however the great thing about the Slimming World activity programme is that it helped me embrace movement on my own terms – to break my exercise down into manageable chunks and set my own mobility goals and challenges. Once I’d committed to it, I achieved my Body Magic Gold award just by gradually stepping up my physio! It made me realise that having a disability didn’t have to stop me from losing weight – the Slimming World food plan and activity programme are so flexible, they work around you.
Now, I have a much better mindset around food, and I put this down to the psychological aspect of Slimming World and the group support. Staying to group really has been the secret of my success. That’s where I learned to understand why I was eating something, and to build a more resilient sense of mindfulness and wellbeing. Where, in the past, I’d be tempted to fall back into my old ways of soothing myself with sweets and biscuits, I now choose cosy, filling meals packed with Free Foods, like a bowl of mac ’n’ cheese or Slimming World chips.
While I’ll always have EDS, my overall health has improved so much since losing weight and I’m so much happier. Losing weight with Slimming World really has changed my life
