#shorts I came across a meme with an interesting question: Why is there a "d" in the word "fridge" but not "refrigerator"? In other words, “refrigerator” does not have a d, but the short form, “fridge,” does! Why is there a “d”? Why don’t we spell fridge like this: “frige” ??? The problem with that spelling is nobody would know how to pronounce it. You see, there are very few words in English that end in “ige.” So people would wonder, is it pronounced “frige” like the word “prestige?” Or “frige” like the word “oblige”? The “d” in “fridge” clearly tells the reader to pronounce the word like “bridge” or “ridge”. So “fridge” is spelled with a “d” to avoid confusion around its pronunciation.
